Play Therapy
Play therapy is a form of counseling that uses play as a child’s natural way of communicating, expressing feelings, and working through experiences. Because children may not have the words to explain their emotions, a trained play therapist provides a safe, supportive environment where they can use toys, games, art, storytelling, and other activities to express themselves.
Through play therapy, children can:
● Express and understand difficult emotions.
● Develop healthy coping and problem-solving skills.
● Build confidence and self-esteem.
● Improve communication and relationships.
● Process stressful or traumatic experiences.
● Practice managing behaviors and emotions.
The therapist observes the child’s play and, depending on the approach, may either allow the child to lead the play or guide activities toward specific therapeutic goals. Play therapy can be used with children experiencing anxiety, grief, behavioral difficulties, family changes, trauma, or challenges with social and emotional development.
